A vibrant celebration was held to mark the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Africa and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Hosted by the Iranian Embassy in Pretoria, the event was graced by prominent figures, including diplomats, government officials, and esteemed guests, all gathered to honor the longstanding ties between the two nations.

The evening commenced with a warm welcome from Mr. Fazel Khayyat, Commercial Counselor of the Iranian Embassy, who highlighted the rich cultural heritage shared by both countries. “Today, we celebrate not only 30 years of diplomacy but also the deep-rooted friendship between our nations, which has flourished over the past five decades,” said Mr. Khayyat, noting the nations’ cooperation as BRICS members and their strong historical ties.

Reflecting on South Africa’s Heritage Month, Mr. Khayyat emphasized the cultural significance of the event, which showcased Iranian traditional music and Persian cuisine, offering attendees a glimpse into Iran’s rich artistic and culinary history. “Iran boasts a long legacy of art, literature, music, and architecture, and today, we are pleased to share a part of that with you,” he added.

He appreciated the work ethic of the Cultural Counselor, Mr. Seyed Mostafa Daryabari for orchestrating a successful South African tour for the Iranian music group.

His Excellency, Ambassador Mansour Shahid Mehr, delivered a keynote address, expressing gratitude for the enduring partnership between the two countries. He recalled the pivotal moments in both nations’ histories, drawing parallels between Iran’s 1979 revolution and South Africa’s 1994 democratic transition. “We share the same emotions of triumph and victory in overcoming oppression, and today, we commemorate 30 years of successful collaboration,” Ambassador Mehr stated.

Highlighting the depth of bilateral cooperation, Ambassador Mehr mentioned the 15 joint commissions held over the years, resulting in more than 80 Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) and agreements spanning various sectors. He also praised South Africa’s role in Iran’s recent inclusion in BRICS, celebrating the nations’ mutual commitment to global peace and cooperation.

As the celebration unfolded, the theme of unity and cultural appreciation was echoed by various speakers. Mr. Ganief Ebrahim Hendricks, leader of the Al Jama-Ah party, commended the ambassador and spoke passionately about the role of cultural diplomacy in strengthening relations between the two nations. He called for increased trade and economic collaboration to reduce inequality and enhance prosperity for both countries.

Mr. Hendricks also emphasized the need for a new global civilization rooted in justice and humanity, referencing South Africa’s role in international legal institutions. “South Africa has realized that the world needs a new civilization, one that prioritizes human rights and dignity,” he said.

The Deputy Director-General of the Department of Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities, representing the South African government, expressed deep appreciation for the cooperation between South Africa and Iran. She highlighted the three MOUs aimed at empowering women, youth, and persons with disabilities, which are in advanced stages of development. “This commitment reflects the strong bond of friendship and mutual respect between our countries,” she noted.

The evening was punctuated by a stirring performance of traditional Iranian music, followed by an authentic Persian dinner, celebrating the rich cultural exchange between South Africa and Iran. As the event drew to a close, the speakers reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the bilateral relationship, with a shared vision of peace, development, and mutual prosperity.
