Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke Wednesday 8th April 2025 in Washington DC, with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. The Secretary of State and the Minister of Foreign Affairs affirmed the strong partnership between the United States and Morocco in promoting peace and security, under the leadership of President Trump and King Mohamed VI.
They discussed cooperation to advance shared priorities in the region, including building on the Abraham Accords, and to expand trade cooperation for the benefit of the Americans and Moroccans.
The Secretary of State reiterated President Trump’s clear position that Hamas must immediately release all hostages, and he praised Morocco’s leadership in contributing to a better future for Israelis, Palestinians, and all people in the region.
The Secretary of State reiterated that the United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and supports Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute. The United States continues to believe that true autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only possible solution.
The Secretary reaffirmed President Trump’s call on the parties to engage in discussions without delay, using Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the only framework, to negotiate a mutually acceptable solution. The Secretary of State noted that the United States would facilitate progress toward that goal.
