Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, spoke at the 4th South Africa-Mozambique Bi-National Commission Tuesday, 2 December 2025 in the city of Maputo.
“Mozambique is SA’s biggest trading partner on the African continent and the fourth globally. So you understand this is one of the most strategic countries for us, also in relation to regional integration. Issues of cross-border crime and issues of regional security. So it is a strategic platform which we are looking forward to for the good bilateral relations,” Lamola said in his opening remarks.
“Building on this firm foundation, our shared task now is to ensure that our partnership improves the quality of life for our respective people.” continued Lamola in his address.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has also travelled to Maputo in order to launch the Sasol Hydrocarbons Processing Integrated Infrastructure project in Inhassoro, the initiative is expected to further enhance energy cooperation as well as unlock new economic opportunities for both South Africa and Mozambique.
“For decades, Mozambique has contributed to South Africa’s energy security through predictable and secure supplies of electricity and gas,” said Minister Lamola in his speech.
South Africa and Mozambique have signed off on more than 70 agreements as well as the Memoranda of Understanding in various sectors which include, Agriculture, health, transport, labour, investments and defence.
In terms of trade Mozambique remains South Africa’s main trading partner on the African continent as R119,4 billion worth of goods and merchandise are exchanged between the two countries in 2024 compared to R18,9 billion in 2023.
“Working with Mozambique and other partners in the region, we will redouble our efforts to advance regional integration and promote peace and security. We remain committed to working with you in support of lasting solutions to terrorism and violent extremism.” Lamola highlighted this in his speech.
