As various global leaders, business leaders and members of civil society gather at this year’s World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, under the theme “A Spirit of Dialogue”. South African Minister Enoch Godongwana leads the South African delegation as he expressed major positivity about South Africa’s direction economically.
“As you know, and you might have noticed, the progress that Transnet is making, also the Minister of Electricity is here with us, with the Eskom team, they are also going to be talking about reforms. I mean, the progress that they have made and of course they are busy meeting with investors, engaging with investors.” said Godongwana at the WEF meeting.
“Minister Godongwana is leading our delegation, and we are simply here to tell the world that we were here last year, we communicated where we are in regards to our national reforms. We are here this year to share the status of where we are, the progress that we have made, and most importantly, to have proof points, particularly around infrastructure.” said Chairperson of BrandSA, Ipeleng Selele.
Godongwana expressed that he feels optimistic about the 2026 Budget, and has promised that it will be delivered without any interruption in the upcoming month.
He also continued to assure South Africans that last year’s debacle which saw the budget being postponed for the first time in South Africa’s democracy will not repeat itself again.
“We have learnt a number of lessons from last year, and we are working as much as we can with the relevant parties to ensure that we have a well supported budget” said Godongwana
. “Key issues which we had a focus on the African Continent, to achieve growth and looked at the critical impediments to that growth, and the international organizations and the finance track members supported such an agenda, which focus on four key areas; one was macro-economic vulnerability, weak economic institutions, lack of infrastructure and high cost of capital.” said Godongwana in the WEF meeting.
The Finance Minister also highlighted that America’s position to invade Greenland was unlikely to come to fruition and also expressed that South Africa’s snub from this year’s G20 is only a temporary setback.
