The University of South Africa (UNISA) makes history by becoming the first educational institution to acquire ownership of an airport which was announced by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Puleng LenkaBula in an effort to train aeronautical and engineering students in specialised fields.

The announcement was made via a press conference celebrating UNISA’s five year academic excellence improvement in international rankings. The Vice-Chancellor highlighted that this will create a platform for future innovators to thrive.

UNISA acquired the airport due to its state of the art and progressive experience in order to prepare students who will be entering complex fields. This is a move to affirm UNISA’s dedication to furthering advancements in innovation and practical education.

“This 20-hectare airport will give our students a unique opportunity to apply their studies in practice and gain skills that are in high demand in the aviation and engineering industries,” said LenkaBula in the press conference.

Since 1873, UNISA  has catered to over 400,000 students worldwide as it has established itself as one of the world’s mega universities.

This acquisition marks UNISA’s dedication to expanding their growth in research output specifically within the fields of digitalisation, biotechnology, renewable energy, and space-science innovation.
