The Republic of Sao Tome and Principe and the Republic of Gabon reiterated, in April 2026, their constant position of support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Morocco over Western Sahara, whiles expressing their strong support for the autonomy plan as the only solution to the Western Sahara dispute.
In a statement to the press at the end of her talks in Rabat with Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad Nasser Bourita, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Communities of Sao Tome and Principe, Ilza Maria dos Santos Amado Vaz, reiterated her country’s firm and constant position in favour of Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty including Western Sahara.
On this occasion, the head of São Tomé and Principe reaffirmed her country’s full support for the autonomy plan presented by the Kingdom of Morocco, as the only credible and realistic solution for the resolution of this regional dispute.
It also welcomed the historic adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which ensures, within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco as a serious, credible and lasting basis for reaching a political solution to this issue.
The head of Gabonese diplomacy also welcomed the adoption, on October 31, 2025, by the United Nations Security Council, of Resolution 2797, which enshrine, within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco as the only serious basis, credible and lasting solution to the dispute over the Sahara.
The Gabonese Minister of Foreign Affairs also stressed that the opening by the Gabonese Republic of a Consulate General in Laayoune in January 2020, which is in line with the dynamics of international recognition of the Kingdom’s territorial integrity, also provides tangible proof of the solidity of the strategic partnership linking the two brotherly countries at the highest level.
The position expressed by Gabon and Sao Tome and Principe, is part of a largely growing international movement in favour of the autonomy plan in Western Sahara under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco.
