The Republic of Honduras has decided, this April 2026, to suspend its recognition of sahrawi democratic arab republic, adding itself to a growing trend of countries suspending there recognition and supporting the Autonomy proposal made by Morocco to end the conflict in Western Sahara.
This decision was communicated to the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad Nasser Bourita,, by Mireya Agüero de Corrales, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Honduras, in an official letter received the last week of April 2026.
Mrs. Agüero de Corrales indicated in this letter that this “suspension stems from its sovereign decision (Honduras), based on its traditional commitment to the principles of non-interference and respect for the internal affairs of other States”.
In the same letter, Minister Corrales mentioned that “Honduras reaffirms its full support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to reach a political, just and lasting solution,” as well as for the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, including Resolution 2797.
The Republic of Honduras has also notified the decision of suspension of sadr to Mr. Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations.
As a reminder, Honduras, a Central American country, had recognized the sadr in 1989, and reconfirmed this recognition in 2022.
