The Republic of Zambia has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over Western Sahara, calling the Kingdom’s autonomy initiative the only viable path to resolve the long-standing Saharan issue.
This position was reiterated Thursday 7thMai 2026 in Rabat during bilateral talks between Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Zambian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, who was on a working visit to the Kingdom.
In a joint statement issued after the meeting, Mr Haimbe welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 on 31 October 2025, which recognized the Moroccan autonomy plan as a serious, credible and lasting basis for reaching a political solution to the dispute over the Sahara.
Haimbe expressed his country’s strong support for the ongoing efforts of the United Nations to achieve a peaceful settlement of the regional issue. He underlined Zambia’s view that the Moroccan autonomy proposal remains the only realistic, pragmatic and mutually acceptable solution. According to him, the initiative offers a constructive framework that can facilitate a lasting political settlement acceptable to all parties concerned.
For his part, Bourita welcomed the constant strengthening of bilateral relations between Morocco and Zambia in recent years. He noted that diplomatic relations have been strengthened by the opening of the Zambian embassy in Rabat and a consulate general in Laayoune in October 2020.
The two ministers reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in various sectors, reflecting the growing partnership between the two nations.
