Republic of Panama reaffirmed, last week in Rabat, its long-standing and unwavering support for the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the only viable solution to the issue of Western Sahara, while expressing its full support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 concerning this issue.

This position was expressed by Panamanian Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Arturo Hoyos Boyd during an official visit to Morocco, following discussions with Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.

The Panamanian head of diplomacy stressed that stressed that the Embassy of the Republic of Panama in Morocco will fully exercises its consular jurisdiction over the entire Moroccan territory, including the Sahara, in a measure reflecting Panama’s clear recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the region.

The Panamanian Deputy Minister also reaffirmed his country’s support for the UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which put the Autonomy as the only basis for a negotiated settlement for this conflict.

In this regard, he also expressed Panama’s full support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to facilitate the political process and advance negotiations on the basis of Morocco’s autonomy initiative in order to reach a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution for all parties concerned.

Panama’s renewed support reinforces the growing international momentum for the Moroccan autonomy plan, widely seen by many countries as the most credible path to regional stability and a lasting resolution of the Western Sahara conflict.
