The newly elected leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) Geordin Hill-Lewis gave his first press conference today in order to discuss his vision and way forward for the party. He was named the new leader on Sunday at the DA Federal Conference in Midrand.

“I think one of the most genuinely exciting outcomes of this weekend is the generational shift in leadership in the DA. Not only myself, but Solly Malatsi. Siviwe Gwarube, Solly Msimanga, Ashor Sarupen, Cilliers Brink and others” said Lewis in his press conference.

Lewis’ appointment comes at the onset of the municipal elections as the DA look to capitalise on this opportunity to usher a new breed of young thinkers who could shape the trajectory of the party.

Lewis takes over the reins from John Steenhuisen who has nominated to step down from his position after seven years in leadership.

Lewis has also noted that he prefers to run for a second term as Mayor of Cape Town instead of opting for a seat in Ramaphosa’s cabinet as he believes his position will firmly help draw distinguishing factors between the DA and the ANC, however he has not ruled out joining the cabinet in the near future.

“Obviously in the national context that’s quite a small platform, it’s one city, But we have wider opportunities than six platforms in the national government,” said Lewis.

These upcoming municipal elections will be a key test as to whether the party can capitalize on the anger of the public due to a lack of water provision in municipalities run by the ANC and as the party changes leadership this will also be a key focal point to consider when it comes to the general elections in 2029.

“I don’t think that it’s the right time to join the GNU. I’m not really ruling out permanently or forever, I really love my job, I love being the mayor of Cape Town” said Lewis.
