Austria announced, late April 2026, its support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), saying that “true autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could be one of the most feasible solutions”.

Austria’s decision has been announced in a joint communiqué adopted at the end of a meeting, in Vienna, between Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Federal Minister of European and International Affairs, and Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, on a working visit to Austria.

Austria welcomed, in this regard, the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2797, which fully supports the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to “facilitate and conduct negotiations on the basis of the autonomy plan, with a view to reaching a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution” for the settlement of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

Austria’s strengthened position consolidates the growing consensus generated by the European momentum supporting the Autonomy proposal made by Morocco, in line with the adoption by the UN Security Council of resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025.
