The Republic of Ecuador reaffirmed, this April 2026, its support for the autonomy initiative for Western Sahara presented by the Kingdom of Morocco considering it as “the only serious, credible and realistic solution” to the regional dispute. Through this position, Quito marked a further deepening of its rapprochement with Rabat on the issue of Western Sahara.

This position was recorded in the joint communiqué signed at the end of the talks between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Ecuadorian counterpart, Gabriela Sommerfeld, on a working visit to the Moroccan capital Rabat.

Ecuador also welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), which enshrines the option of autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the most feasible solution to definitively end this dispute.

The two countries also reaffirmed their support for the efforts carried out under the aegis of the United Nations, in particular the action of the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Sahara, with a view to a lasting and mutually acceptable political settlement.

The joint statement also highlights a decision with strong political and symbolic significance through which Ecuador has decided to extend its consular coverage provided by their Embassy in Rabat to the Sahara.

This diplomatic measure is part of the growing momentum of international recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara especially in Latin America. To recall that the Honduras decided, just days ago, to suspend its recognition of the sahrawi arab republic democratic and instead support the Autonomy proposal of Morocco for Western Sahara.
