The King Mohammed VI informed, in a letter dated July 2, 2026, the U.S. President of his decision to name the Tiznit-Dakhla expressway the “Donald J. Trump Highway”, underlining the exceptional, vibrant and fruitful relations during the two terms of President Trump.
The Sovereign also affirmed that the historic recognition, in 2020, of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara will forever be etched in the memory of all Moroccans, from one generation to the next, adding that this recognition has given unprecedented momentum to the bilateral relations.
In this regard, the Moroccan Monarch indicated that to “honour this mark of friendship and peace, and as his personal expression of his deep appreciation, he had taken the decision to name one of the Kingdom’s most significant highways after the American President, calling it the Donald J. Trump Highway, stretching over 1,055 kilometres, this highway is the longest road infrastructure in all of Africa”.
“A strategic axis of prime importance, it connects northern and southern Morocco, also linking Europe to the African continent. It unifies our country, in much the same way your leadership has brought our two nations closer to each other in unprecedented ways,” the Sovereign added in the letter.
In response to this highly symbolic Initiative, the U.S. President expressed his gratitude to King Mohammed VI in a message shared on his social media platform, Truth Social, on July 26, 2026. “Thank you to Highly Respected Mohammed VI, the King of Morocco — Such a Great Honor! I look forward to traveling the entire length of this Great Highway someday, hopefully soon,” President Donald J. Trump wrote.
This initiative further underscores the exceptional strategic partnership between the two countries. A historic relationship that has only grown stronger under the leadership of the two Heads of State, King Mohammed VI and President Donald J. Trump.
This expressway was built to international standards as part of the new development model for Southern provinces, launched by the Moroccan Monarch on the 40th anniversary of the Green March. As one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the Southern Provinces, this expressway connecting Tiznit to Dakhla, passing through Guelmim and Laayoune among other cities, provides these regions with a highway up to international standards and offers a high level of security. It helps significantly reduce travel times, limit traffic disruptions caused by flooding and sand accumulation, and facilitate the transport of people and goods between Southern provinces and the Kingdom’s major economic hubs.
Beyond its infrastructural aspect, the “Donald J. Trump Highway” holds major strategic significance. As the backbone of Morocco’s Atlantic corridor, it forms part of the Royal Vision aimed at transforming the Atlantic coast into an integrated space for development, cooperation, and shared prosperity with African countries.
The naming of this road after President Donald J. Trump also reflects the geopolitical dimension of this transformative project, which transcends the scope of national infrastructure into a strategic corridor promoting trade and economic complementarity in West Africa, as part of the major Atlantic initiatives led by the King Mohammed VI.
This gesture underscores a solid exceptional strategic partnership between the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States and reflects excellent ties between the King Mohammed VI and President Donald J. Trump, who pointed out, in a message addressed to the Sovereign on the occasion of the Glorious Throne Day, that “this year, we celebrate 250 years of American history and enduring friendship with Morocco – a bond forged in trust and mutual respect”.
In this message, the American President further confirmed to the King that “the United States is unequivocal: we recognize Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and support Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution.”
A path of peace leading to prosperity and growth for Morocco and Africa, the “Donald J. Trump Highway” complements the numerous Royal Initiatives aimed at making Morocco a driving force for the continent’s development and a logistics hub facilitating trade between Europe and Africa.
