The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has stated that they are intending to provide security for Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) prosecutor, Drushanta Ramsamy, due to her bold testimony in front of the commission. 

Last week Ramsamy testified at the Madlanga about the decision made by IDAC to arrest and prosecute Crime Intelligence head, Dumisani Khumalo, as well as the unit’s head of technical support services, Dineo Mokwele. 

She testified that there were a number of irregularities with the decision to arrest and prosecute the two employees. She had played a recording for the commission which entailed a phone call between her and former IDAC head Andrea Johnson.

Johnson was heard using aggressive language in the recording in her description of the Madlanga Commission. She had accused the commissioners of being unprofessional and criticised how they handled her testimony. 

“As you know, we don’t discuss the details of security arrangements but where necessary, and obviously it is informed by a proper risk and threat analysis, the commission or the employer of those individuals will provide the necessary security,” said commission spokesperson, Jeremy Michaels.  

Former head of IDAC, Andrea Johnson, spent over six days on the witness stand and came under heavy questioning by commission chairperson, Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, as well as the commission’s panel regarding investigations that had fallen outside the unit’s legal mandate including; mishandling police investigations as well as her relationship with senior police officer General Firoz Khan. 

The inquiry then shifted its attention to the Project Diversion which was a controversial Crime Intelligence Investigation unit. “What has become apparent is that there needs to be a few more checks and balances than there currently are,” said Johnson to the commission.
