In the wake of the uncertain relations between South Africa and the United States especially regarding the recent trade tariff increase imposed by US President Donald Trump’s administration which kicked in on the 7th of August 2025. The South African government has now offered a response to the tariff hikes.
The government has outlined five key points that will hope to ensure stable international trade and a commitment to stabilizing the economy.
The government continues to affirm that they will continue to foster relations with the United States and will continue to engage them in regards to negotiating a reduction on the rates imposed by America.
There have been revisions made in terms of an initial offer that was sent to the US in May which had received approval from Cabinet in regards to the United States’ 2025 National Trade Estimates Report.

This report outlines sanitary measures when it comes to exporting goods such as poultry, pork and blueberries which serve as critical goods that are traded between the United States and South Africa.
“We will at the same time accelerate our efforts to diversify markets and build on the efforts we have put in place to ensure predictability in trade and leverage all our existing partnerships to secure markets for our products.” said Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Parks Tau when addressing media on plans to still broaden their dependence on other markets while still trying to strengthen ties with America.
The five elements that Parks Tau had made mention of include; continuing engagement with America to reduce the tariffs; diversifying their exports to alternate between different markets; an economic response package for companies and workers that are vulnerable to the tariff increases; trade defense against a surge in imports and dumping and demand side interventions.
“Cabinet has approved that South Africa submits a revised offer as a basis for negotiations with the US. The new offer builds on the previous offer submitted in May 2025. The new offer substantively responds to the issues the US has raised in the 2025 National Trade estimates report.” said Tau
Minister Tau has expressed that the government will be looking closely at Asia in terms of broadening their markets which include countries such as Thailand, Japan, Vietnam, the Middle East as well as India; “We are pursuing these markets because we see growing demand, existing negotiations and a positive reception to South African products.”
