Fears of a serial killer running rampant in the communities of Pretoria, have caused severe public anxiety. What was supposed to be a weekend of sound commemoration and reflection over the bravery of the women of 1956, has now begged the question if women in South Africa will ever feel safe.
Helder Isidro, who was the primary suspect for the murder of five women in the last three months, has only been strongly linked to only one of them.
Loveness Magabe, one of the five women who were murdered, was said to have been killed by the time Helder Isidro had been released on bail.
Magabe had been reported missing since July before her body was tragically found in the backyard of Helder Isidro who has been noted to use social media outlets in order to lure his victims.
A friend of Magabe, Faith Mawelewele, said that she felt a sense of discomfort over her friend being dropped off at Isidro’s home even though there were conversations that they would meet at a lodge.
Three women’s bodies were tragically found burnt at Watloo Station in July with a fourth being found at the same station on 4 August 2025.
“Three burned bodies were found between Watloo and Denneboom train stations between June and July 2025” said Brigadier Brenda Muridili.
Muridili has stated that there haven’t been any arrests made at this time however has assured the public that officers are working around the clock to chase possible leads that would enable them to trace the perpetrators of these crimes.
“The team comprises seasoned detectives, crime intelligence, forensic and crime scene experts.” added Muridili.
“Police are appealing to anyone who might have information that can help in the investigation or assist in the apprehension of the suspects to please call the nearest police station or call crime stop on 08600 10111. Information can also be given anonymously via MySAPS app that can be downloaded from any smartphone.” said Muridili
