Guinea-Bissau has renewed last week its support for Morocco’s position on Western Sahara, once again hailing the Moroccan autonomy proposal as the most realistic and viable route to lasting settlement of the decades-long dispute.

This reiteration of the Guinean position in support of Moroccan territorial integrity came earlier today during a meeting between Moroccan Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita and his counterpart Joao Bernardo Vieira.

Vieira reaffirmed his country’s position during a press statement following a meeting in Rabat with Bourita.

Guinea-Bissau expressed its country’s unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara, describing the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the most optimal way to a credible and realistic solution to the regional dispute.
The country also expressed support for the historic, game-changing Resolution 2797, which the UN Security Council adopted in October 2025.

The resolution recognizes the Autonomy Plan as the only feasible political solution and a lasting basis for achieving a sustainable political resolution to the dispute.
Bissau and Rabat, have long shared a commitment to regional and international responsibility, Vieira stated, stressing their joint determination to strengthen relations and strategic partnerships at all levels.

Guinea-Bissau is one of the more than 30 countries that have opened consulates general in Morocco’s southern provinces in Western Sahara.

The West African country opened its consulate in Morocco’s Dakhla in October 2020.More than 126 countries support the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the most feasible or the only solution to end the Sahara dispute.
