The Madlanga Commission has decided to shift its focus to the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) specifically towards the head of the IDAC, Andrea Johnson, who allegedly interfered in an assault investigation against Feroz Khan.
The commission has heard testimony from Kobus Roelofse, who served as a retired colonel of the Hawks. He testified on how the assault complaint was handled by Johnson who served as a senior prosecutor.
He also highlighted the role that, Shamila Batohi, who is a former head of the National Prosecuting Agency (NPA), and highlighted how she had also responded to the complaints about Johnson’s alleged interference.
Roelofse testified that Johnson received a written assault complaint against Khan, from a journalist known as Barry Bateman, who had shared the letter with Khan as this was a means to share his side of the story in regards to the complaint received. “Adv Johnson told me of the colonel.
I found it extremely concerning that Adv Batohi would have told Adv Johnson about a protected disclosure implicating her, Adv Johnson in wrongdoing” said Roelofse in his testimony.
Roelofse had stated that the assault case against Khan was closed and the fact that Johnson had interfered had been something that was not addressed thoroughly if not at all.
“When we got hold of the docket, it became clear from the entries of the docket that Khan was supposed to be interviewed on that specific day, before submitting his warning statement” said Roelofse.
Currently Johnson has had to be rushed to the hospital and is unable to give her testimony at the Commission at this time. The current shift in probing IDAC comes as President Cyril Ramaphosa had announced that the Madlanga Commission will continue until November.
