The March and March movement in retaliation to the fatal shooting of Andile Mvuyelwa Somgxada, who served as the leader of March and March’s Gauteng chapter, has vowed that their protests will intensify due to the wave of threats to their members.

Somgxada had led the March and March chapter in Greenfield, Ekhuruleni. “He was rushed to hospital for medical treatment, where he fought for his life until the final hour of Thursday, July 9 2026, when he was found dead” said spokesperson of March and March Sandile Dube. 

Dube also specified that this murder follows reports that other March and March leaders have received death threats. He stated that according to him, the threats are from people who have been benefitting from extortion as well as the collection of protection fees from undocumented foreign nationals operating illegal businesses.

 “We call upon law enforcement authorities to get to the bottom of this matter, as it is bound to create unnecessary tension in various communities,” said Dube. There is also confirmation from Dube that the regional leader operating in Tshwane also received death threats during Thursday’s march. 

“Similar threats have also been received in Umlazi township in Kwa-Zulu Natal and in Mpumalanga province, all directed at March and March leaders” said Dube. 

Dube has also emphasised that despite these threats the movement will continue to hold protests on Thursday nationwide, specifically in Gauteng, as the resistance seems to have a growing mass as well as a high volume of undocumented foreign nationals.

 “We call upon South Africans to stand up in defence of their country against drug cartels, extortionists disguised as security companies, drug dealers and human trafficking agents whose businesses are being disrupted by these continuous marches” said Dube.

 He also urged that South Africans take a moment to honour the life of Somgxada and to uphold his legacy. A memorial service for Somgxada is expected to be held in Gauteng later this week and his funeral will take place in the Eastern Cape.
