The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mmamoloko Kubayi, addressed the media regarding the Madlanga Commission, which is centered around rehabilitating the justice system due to its corruption.
Minister Kubayi expressed that the commission highlights the government’s commitment to rule of law, as well as addressing the weaknesses in various institutions in South Africa and aiming to strengthen them, especially institutions which are centered around upholding the law.
“The commission is also to strengthen our institutions, and also the entirety of the architecture of state governance and capacity,” said Minister Kubayi.
Minister Kubayi also serves as the co-chairperson of the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) group and gave an address to the Brand South Africa Media Roundtable at the Nelson Mandela Foundation on Friday.
“When we look at where we come from in terms of the state capture, there is a need for us to be able to emphasise the importance of ethical leadership,” Kubayi said further.
The Minister had expressed the importance of building a state that is ethical and capable of dealing with situations pertaining to unjust and criminal acts which are also priorities listed under the Medium-Term Development Plan (MTDP).
“You can’t build confidence in investment when you do not deal with issues such as…fighting crime because those are critical. Now we have developed, in going forward as a cluster, five outcomes that are aligned to the MTDP and more broadly, because we are focusing particularly on that area of building capacity to be able to fight crime and corruption in the country,” said Minister Kubayi.
Minister Kubayi added that this commission will take strides from the notable Zondo Commission which weakened various key institutions in order to build them back up with imputable integrity.
“A continuation of the Madlanga Commission would reflect on what would have been the Zondo Commission’s observations on some of the institutions…and we’ll account as well, in terms of what we have done to rebuild those institutions,” said Kubayi
The Minister also highlighted that certain measures to uphold this justice institutions such as recruiting 10,000 new police officers and 21 youth victim-friendly facilities to respond to Gender-Based Violence.
