Chairman of Eskom Holdings, Dr Mteto Nyati, expressed at the Joburg Indaba that Eskom has moved its focus away from energy security and has told the conference that Eskom will not shift its focus on providing affordable energy. 

“Our initial focus was energy security but that’s behind us now. We want to provide affordable energy. Going forward we need to have single digit increases that are in line with CPI [Consumer Price Index]. To achieve that we need to take R112 million out of our base costs over the next 5 years.” said Nyati. 

Nyati also expressed that Eskom will also focus on greener energy, specifically through clean coal as a point of interest. 

“As Eskom we look at the different sources and means of energy. Our consistent source of energy for us is coal and it’s been our interest to find ways of making coal clean” said Nyati 

Last month municipal debt concerns have continued to be an issue for Eskom as municipalities across the country owe Eskom over R100 billion. 

However, despite these concerns Eskom have expressed that the public should not worry about the return of load shedding as the electricity problem in the country has stabilised.

 As the municipal debt continues to pile up, Eskom has remained powerless in trying to get the money back according to Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa.
