United States President Donald Trump took to social media to boldly announce that the South African contingent will not be invited to next year’s G20 which will be held in Miami Florida.

Trump’s statements come after a string of unsteadiness between the United States and South Africa throughout the year such as Trump propagating a narrative that Afrikaner farmers in South Africa are being killed for their land, or the increased tariff hikes that the South African government have tried so desperately to negotiate with the Trump’s administration to decrease.

However, the straw that seemed to break the American back was South Africa’s unwillingness to concede the G20 Presidency to America, who opted to boycott the Summit entirely this year.

“Therefore, at my direction, South Africa will NOT be receiving an invitation to the G20 2026, which will be hosted in the great city of Miami, Florida next year” the social media post reads

. Even though members of the G20 do not need an invitation to attend the gathering, it is still possible for America to deny their visas for entry into the country. “If visas are denied, then we will have to move on and look beyond the G20 in the US,” said South African Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya as he told BBC.

Magwenya highlighted that South Africa will focus on working with other G20 member countries to advance outlines that were discussed during the Leader’s Summit that was held in Johannesburg.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed that since the United States were absent from this year’s G20, the handover of the Presidency was conducted via a US embassy official at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) headquarters.

In the post that Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, he expressed that South Africa is “a country not worthy of membership anywhere” and also expressed that “all payments and subsidies to them, effective immediately.”

The South African government has opted to call for solidarity by asking other member countries of the G20 to uphold the integrity and rights of G20 member states. The Summit which was held in Johannesburg saw the member states collectively moving towards multilateral co-operation on climate change and economic inequality. America has accused South Africa of weaponizing their G20 Presidency, as the US objected to this leader’s declaration.
