The relevant authorities have apprehended two suspects that are connected to the murder of two tourists that were visiting the Kruger National Park. The bodies that were found were those of Ernst (71) and Dina (73) Marais which were discovered last month.
Their stolen vehicle was found in Chokwe, Mozambique last week. The recovery of this vehicle has led to the arrest of the first suspect on Monday and then the second on Tuesday.
“The victims were reported missing after they were last seen on Wednesday 20 May 2026, at Pafuri picnic site in the Kruger National Park. A search operation was subsequently launched after their failed return. On Thursday, 21 May 2026, their bodies were discovered near Crook’s Corner at the intersection of the Limpopo and Limpopo rivers within the Kruger National Park under the Masisi policing area in the Vhembe District” said Limpopo Police Spokesperson, Hlulani Mashaba.
“We said that these criminals would be apprehended, and that is exactly what has happened…I would like to thank all of those who have worked tirelessly and collaboratively from the onset to secure this breakthrough” said Aucamp.
Aucamp also commended the efforts made by the South African Police Service (SAPS), SANParks, the Mozambican authorities as well as conservation partners.
Aucamp emphasised that these arrests formed part of an extensive cross-border operation involving Sernic, which is Mozambique’s specialist agency tasked with the investigation of serious and organised crime in tandem with the Kruger National Park ranger services.
“The arrests mark a significant milestone in the investigation and demonstrate the effectiveness of cross-border operations in combating serious and violent crime. We extend our appreciation to the Mozambican Law Enforcement authorities, SANParks and all role players whose efforts contributed to this breakthrough” said Limpopo’s Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe.
