The head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), Andrea Johnson, has written a letter of request to President Cyril Ramaphosa to be relieved of her duties in her capacities in the IDAC.

Her contract requires three months’ notice even though she has asked to leave her post with immediate effect. Her request for a resignation comes after a hard hitting appearance at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry last week, where she was subjected to intense questioning.

Her testimony raised serious questions about the operations of the IDAC and how the unit conducts their decision making process. As she came under fire at the Madlanga Commission of inquiry when she confessed that the IDAC arrested and prosecuted Crime Intelligence Technical Support Head, Brigadier Dineo Mokwele, upon receiving incorrect information.

Johnson claims that Mokwele could have been used to facilitate the looting of Crime Intelligence funds but was challenged by Commissioner Sandile Khumalo on her statement.

“She would’ve been approached to make monies available under circumstances where she would not have made them available.” said Johnson in her testimony.

National Prosecuting Agency (NPA) spokesperson Kaizer Nganyago said that the head of the NPA, Andy Mothibi, has received the letter. “From our side, we can confirm that we received the letter and we are proposing it” said Kganyago.

Ramaphosa has accepted her letter of resignation to be removed from her position as IDAC head with immediate effect.

 “Adv Johnson directed her request for an immediate release from office to the national director of public prosecutions and President Ramaphosa” said the presidency in a statement.

 “The president assures the leadership staff of the NPA of the government’s unwavering support for its work in the fight against crime and corruption” read the statement.
